Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan SHAGUN website

Our latest  website was commissioned by the Government of India for the Education Department.

The website was developed  in collaboration with the World Bank Group, as an online platform for monitoring Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the flagship program of the Government of India supporting Universalization of Elementary Education (UEE). SSA is a centrally sponsored scheme providing universal access to education to children in the age group of six to fourteen years of age.

In the first phase, the repository allows for sharing of four basic kinds of content: case studies, videos (linked into a dedicated SSA YouTube channel), images, and testimonials, with more content types to be added in future phases. Behind the repository is a powerful database, built using open source software, that allows all content to be tagged according to its content type, the State/s to which it pertains, and the relevant SSA components that it covers (such as theSwachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, and Pade Bharat Bade Bharat). To make it easy to find content, users can either search directly for specific resources or browse through the content by State, by component, or by content type. An interactive map of India makes it easy for users to locate all content for an individual State, with every State and Union Territory having its own dedicated ‘sub-site’ within the repository. The repository home page presents the most recent content on the site, while similar prioritization has been emulated on each State and Union Territory’s dedicated home page. The repository has a decentralized management structure that enables State governments to choose, upload and manage their own content. In this way, it will encourage States to share content, as the site structure makes it relatively simply to compare what is happening in each component on a State-by-State basis.

The repository has been developed using an engaging interface that helps visitors to understand SSA achievements by connecting them with human stories captured in photographs, text, and videos. Therefore, the repository has been designed as an ‘album’ that visitors can browse at leisure, understanding and appreciating the work being done across the country. Using WordPress (a very robust open source software content management system), the design closely emulates the layouts used by blogging websites that are known for their visual simplicity and structured cataloging.
